Job brief

This level of job is to assume responsibility for planning and providing guidance for sampling, laboratory testing and chemical control for steam and gas power plants and their auxiliaries to monitor water quality for steam turbine units, desalination plants, chlorination plants, demineralization plants, auxiliary boilers, and potable water systems and all auxiliary equipment and systems. Also, perform testing of lubricating oils and fluids, and to perform analysis of fuel gas or liquid fuel and oils used in the plant. Plan and direct performance of maintenance and improving operation and availability of the chemical analysis systems to reduce corrosion, contamination and fouling in the plant.

Responsibilities

 

 

• Participate to develop sampling programs and conduct analysis of sea water, waste water, special sample analysis, specific ion analysis and other quality related parameters of seawater, potable water, sanitary waste water, treated effluent, reclaimed water, boiler water and demineralized water. Assist to determine nature and quantity of additives required to be added to meet the defined criteria

• Participate to conduct programs of sample and data collection and analysis to identify and quantify environmental toxicants.

• Participate to check the effectiveness of the water treatment programs for the boilers.

• Participate to monitor the desalination and dematerializing units, and provide advice on scale control.

Participate to conduct and manage sampling and testing of incoming gas fuel for heating value, sourness and other quality related parameters. • Participate to conduct and manage testing of incoming liquid fuel like crude oil for fuel quality and amount of bottom sand and water (BS&W) mixed with liquid fuel.

Participate to conduct and manage periodic sampling and testing of lubricants, oils and other fluids used in the power plant mechanical systems to determine wear products in them for predictive analysis for maintenance planning.

 Participate to advice on chemicals quality, inventory and safety procedures for handling and minimizing chemicals consumption. Set chemical standards for the plant and determine action levels.

• Participate to conduct research and compile of ‘material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals used in the plant in coordination with department/division responsible for industrial safety.

• Participate to advice other divisions in the power plant and other departments in the Company on chemical related issues and problems.

• Assist to initiate modifications or revisions to existing operating procedures and test methods and the procurement of laboratory testing equipment, reagents and consumables.

• Assist to initiate the design justification and development within his area of the plant modifications in the existing facilities. Assist in overseeing engineering and construction and establish maintenance requirements and priorities.

• Participate to ensure proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment by all laboratory workers.

• Participate to perform periodic calibration, and maintenance of specialty laboratory equipment like Mass Spectrographic Analysis equipment, colorimeters and other testing equipment.

• Comply strictly with approved safety practices and procedures in carrying out own duties.

• Participate in safety meetings and assist in maintaining safety programs.

• Check and ensure that the laboratory and related work areas are kept in a clean and orderly state in order that work can be carried out more efficiently.

• Assist to provide feedback on work undertaken, either verbally or by completion of worksheets, to facilitate the monitoring of work progress and identify areas of concern.

• Assist crew leader or supervisor to prepare necessary paperwork and reports, including technical test repots and work/progress reports

• Maintain log books and operating log sheets recording various operating conditions and instrument readings.

• Participate to review the operating performance daily with his subordinates and with the division head. Provide operational recommendations to accomplish regular requirements and unusual demands. Ensure that his staff is informed of the anticipated operation requirements on a current and future basis.

• Assist to prepare written reports of work performed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 5 to 9 years of relevant experience.
  • industrial experience as a Chemist in a Combined Cycle Power Plant.
  •  Specialized knowledge: perform periodic calibration, and maintenance of specialty laboratory equipment like Mass Spectrographic Analysis equipment, colorimeters and other testing equipment.
  • Good knowledge of industrial standards relating to chemical analysis.
  • Familiar with interpretation of quality reports.
  • Familiar with various categories of water and chemical analysis.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
